Albuquerque International Balloon Festival 2009

Our trip to Albuquerque 2009 was a wonderful expierence. We had a great time flying and hanging around with some wonderful people.

Thank you Elisa and Mark.

We miss you and love you, hope to see you both in Europe before AIBF2010 

30 Settembre/September

May the adventure start:

Milan-Atlanta take-off at 10:45 am

Atlanta-Albuquerque Arrival at 6:13 pm

First of all, we will never fly Delta Airlines again.

After buying our tickets we found out that Delta has applied restrictions to the dimension of your luggage; max 157cm! Suck, we had to buy a new set of bags because ours were to big.

At the airport Elisa and Mark are waiting for us and off to dinner, Margaritas and Chili! With Elisa, Mark, Anthony, Marisa, Daniel and Gregory, yeah!

Off to sleep.

Ore 9:00 check-in, qualche piccolo  problema con l'assicurazione subito risolto con telefonata nervosa in Italia. Ritiro del pilot pack, un po' una delusione e la giacca non è quella della Columbia delle passate edizioni, sarà meglio l'anno prossimo, e via a prendere il pickup ... eh? pickup? è un camion! fa una media di 12 miglia con un gallone (voi fate i calcoli!).

Ritiro pallone, tutto OK grazie agli spedizionieri della Nord Ovest di Cuneo (un pò caro spedire il tutto, la prossima volta cercheremo un pallone US registered).

Gas, tutto OK

Pomeriggio dedicato all'old town di Albuquerque e shopping!!!!!

9:00 AM Check-in, some problem with the insurance promptly solved, with a nervous phone call to Italy.

Pilot pack,maybe better next year. The jacket was not the Columbia jackets of the past years and of very poor quality, pity. Off to get our truck. WOW, Don Chalmers gives us a brand new Ford F-250 truck, it's almost bigger than my house!!

twelve miles with a gallon, in Italy I would be broke in ten days.

Back to the field we pickup the balloon. Thanks to Nord Ovest shippers that did a fantastic job. Gas, all OK.

Giornata dedicata allo Shopping e ottima cena da Mark ed Elisa. Elisa, cuoca eccezionale, ci ha fatto una tipica cena del New Mexico a base di Chili. Molto buono e HOT come dicono da ste parti.

Abbiamo conosciuto così la famiglia Trillanes and friends

Evening dinner at chez Trillanes. What a great dinner Elisa. Typical New Mexico dinner with lots of HOT Chili. The best I've had.

We met the Trillanes family and friends.

Primo volo io e Monica. Decollo ore 8:00 e atterraggio ore 9:00 a Rio Rancho. Che delirio di folla e palloni. Mai vista una cosa simile, fantastico!!!!

Decollare in mezzo a 550 palloni e circa 100.000 spettatori è da brividi. Spettacolare!

Volo di un'ora verso nord-ovest sorvolando parte della riserva indiana ed il Rio Grande.

Che peccato che l'Americas Challange (Palloni a gas) non sia decollata. Il vento e le previsioni negative hanno abortito il programma

First flight, Me and Monica, takeoff at 8:00 AM and landing at 9:00 at Rio Rancho.

Something every pilot must try at least once in life. Never seen anything similar, taking off with 550 balloons and about 100.000 people. Fantastic!

An hour flight verse north-west over part of the Indian reserve and the Rio Grande. Awesome!

Tailgate the rest of the day waiting for the Americas Challenge. What a pity they cancelled all for wind and weather forecast.

4 Ottobre/October

Secondo volo io, Mark e un'amica di Jason e Jenny. Decollo, ore 7:50, dal campo con poco vento che si va intensificando verso l'atterraggio con 8 nodi, ore 8:40. Bellissimo volo con splash and dash nel Rio Grande. Atterriamo nel vicino paese di Rio Rancho.

Mi hanno battezzato alla loro maniera, divertentissimo.

Second flight Me, Mark and a friend of Jenny and Jason. Takeoff 7:50 with very low wind that will intensify at landing with 8 knots at 8:40 in Rio Rancho.

Great flight with my first Splash 'n Dash in the Rio Grande. Mark gave the ceremony on the field, very good and great fun.

5 Ottobre/October

Terzo volo io, Monica e John. Decollo alle 7:20 atterraggio alle 8:00. Di nuovo decollo in vento calmo e atterraggio a 8 nodi a Bernalillo. Volo molto bello ma molto veloce in 40 minuti facciamo più di 15 km. Alla sera; Flight of the Nations Party, non male affatto in un resort del gruppo Hyatt. Le Margeritas erano niente male ;-)

Third flight me, Monica and John. Takeoff at 7:20 and landing 8:00. Calm winds at takeoff that increased just before landing to 8 knots in Bernalillo.

Very nice flight with faster layers aloft.

Evening Flight of the Nations Party. Hyatt resort very cool. Food a Margaritas very nice ;-)

NO VOLO, piove, visita all'Anderson Abruzzo Museum e poi party allo zoo. Bellissimo.

NO FLIGHT. Rain, Visit to the museum with Cyndie and then off to the Zoo Party. Very nice.

7 Ottobre/October

Quarto volo io e Donny decollo alle 8:10 atterraggio alle 9:00 con 3 nodi.

 sulla croce 5 metri, terzo. Secondo marker out of bounds sulla seconda croce. Texas hold'em poker non ho capito la gara, mi rifarò la prossima volta.

Forth flight me and Donny. Takeoff at 8:10 and landing at 9:00 with 3 knots.

Fly-in and Texas Hold'Em. On first target 5 meters, out of bounds on second, not bad. Didn't understand a thing about the poker stuff but will make up next time.

8 Ottobre/October

Quinto volo io, Monica e Michael. Decollo troppo tardi ed il vento che cambia direzione ed intensità. Tentiamo di tutto per arrivare sul campo ma niente da fare per il fly-in.  Direzione sud-est. Attraversiamo tutta la città, ad una velocità di 10-11 nodi a 200 piedi, che ha poco o nessuna opportunità di atterraggio, la velocità è buona per cui possiamo attraversarla senza problemi. Verso la base dell'aeronautica scorgo un bellissimo prato verde e decido di atterrare li. Manovra perfetta ed atterraggio perfetto. Arrivano circa 15 persone ad aiutare ma purtroppo nella foga fanno la manovra errata invece di tirare la corda di corona sottovento o lateralmente, per paura di far finire il pallone sul recinto, in quattro tirano sopravento formando così una vela, in pochissimi secondi il pallone viene trascinato in avanti 4-5 metri e finisce sopra un palo della luce. Strappiamo tre pannelli e con l'aiuto dei vigili del fuoco recuperiamo tutto.

Grazie Elisa, Mark, Beth, Dan, Donny, Anne e tutto l'equipaggio per l'aiuto che ci avete dato perché il giorno dopo potessimo di nuovo volare. Non lo dimenticheremo mai.

Decollo alle 8:25 atterraggio 9:25 con 7 nodi

Fifth flight me, Monica and Micheal. Takeoff to late with wind that shifts from west to north-west. We tried to get on the field for the fly-in but no way. Direction south east. Flight over the city of Albuquerque at a cruising speed of 10-11 knots at 200 feet, with very few or no spots to land. The speed is good to cross the city and land over the airbase. Just before the Airbase I see a play ground big enough to land and do my final approach. Perfect and safe landing. We have a great crew and in seconds there are at least 15 peple to help. Unfortunately, for the fear that the envelope goes over the fence 4 guys pull the crown line upwind creating a very big sail and the balloon skids forward other 12/15 feet enough to wrap over a light pole. Three panels ripped. Graat job of the fire department and we free the ballon.

A very special thanks to some wonderful friends, it is only thanks to you that we were able to fly again the day after. Thanks Elisa, Mark, Beth, Dan, Donny, Anne and all the crew. We will never forget.

Sesto volo io, Monica e Jenny, decollo alle 8:05 atterraggio 9:05 con 2 nodi.  Volo memorabile con fly-in sul campo, Minimum Distance Double Drop; Ottimo risultato. Mancato il palo di pochi metri (sic!). Proprio mentre mi avvicinavo al palo del key grab un pallone scende sulla mia destra bloccando quella leggera deriva a sinistra che avevo; risultato il pallone alla mia destra che subisce la stessa virata va dritto sul palo. Peccato!

Grandioso Splash 'n Dash nel Rio Grande con Monica e Jenny bagnati fin sotto il ginocchio. Party sul campo , che delirio. Difficile non divertirsi e con una compagnia di matti come questi è tutto stupendo. Cena: Spaghetti con Tartufo chez Tom Miklousic.

Sixth flight me, Monica and Jenny, takeoff at 8:05 landing at 9:05 with 2 knots. A memorable flight with fly-in on the field Minimum Distance Double Drop; good result. Key grab missed for inches, I was tracking to the pole perfectly when a balloon descended on my right occluding the wind (a slow left drift) so we turned slightly right just in time to see the balloon on our left turning with us and going straight for the envelope. What a pity!

Fantastic Splash 'n Dash in Rio Grande all of us wet just under our knees. Fiesta on the field, delirium.

Evening dinner with Tom Miklousic and spaghetti with black truffle from Croatia.

10 Ottobre/October

Settimo volo io e Dan e poi Jason, decollo ore 7:40 atterraggio ore 9:40 con 1 nodo.

Risultati finali tredicesimi!!!!

Peccato che non avevo capito le regole e martedì avevo buttato anche il secondo marker su un'altro bersaglio, alla fine No Result e sessantesimo posto.

Seventh flight , me and Dan and second takeoff with Jason. Takeoff at 7:40 and landing at 9:40 with one knot.

Final results thirteenth!!!!

No, sorry, says Pat, we had to disqualify you on Tuesday because you threw the second baggie. Read the rules. Final result, sixtieth. Not bad all the same.

One word for one of the best crews we've ever had: THANKS Jenny and Jason we miss you and hope you will want to crew with us again soon.
